Sons of UCF Newsletter, Volume 17

Sons of UCF Dispatch

After an impressive 23-year run, the ESPN daytime program Around The Horn aired its final episode this past Friday. Admittedly, I wasn’t a regular viewer of ATH in recent years, but it is hard to deny the impact that the show had on the world of sports content. Heck, if you look closely at some of the Sons programming, you’ll see and hear the influence ATH, and shows like it, have had on our content. However, one thing you cannot argue is that 23 years is quite a streak, while also serving as a reminder that all good things eventually come to an end.

Speaking of an ending, we recognize that many of you were left confused by the end of the most recent Sons of UCF Live episode (which you can watch here). What happened, what does it mean, and what was the big announcement? Those are all great questions, and frankly, we have the same questions.

So, now what? Stay tuned!

Alex Haynes needs to be in the Hall of Fame

On Monday, we launched our official campaign to get former UCF Running Back Alex Haynes inducted into the UCF Athletics Hall of Fame. Alex had an impressive career as a Knight, and is currently third in career rushing yards and sixth in career TDs. Also, keep in mind that Alex compiled those stats playing three seasons in Mike Kruczek’s spread offense and the winless season of 2004, making it even more impressive.

If you aren’t familiar with Alex, we were fortunate to have him join us for an interview in July of 2023:

Let’s get #Haynes2025 trending

Cuttin’ it up with Andrea Adelson

I have long respected ESPN.com’s Andrea Adelson for the coverage she has provided to UCF. Along with maybe Chris Vaninni from The Athletic, no other national reporter consistently takes the time to cover the Knights in any meaningful way. Andrea recently visited campus and sat down with several staffers as she worked on her latest UCF piece, a profile on Scott Frost.

I was fortunate to have Andrea join me to share some more insight on her conversations with Frost, McKenzie Milton, and Terry Mohajir.

Cow of the Week

And the winner is: SEC commissioner Greg Sankey.

In response to a question about changes to the CFP and college sports in general, the SEC commissioner decided to grab some headlines. First, there was this:

Then, there was this salvo, which included a shot at the Big 12 and ACC, along with a shocking inability to look in the mirror:

The best part was Big 12 communications director Clark Williams coming off the top rope to dunk on Sankey’s inaccurate comments:

All of which grabs the attention of elected government officials:

Yeah, college sports are in a really good place these days.

Thanks and Goodbye
